When Time is of the Essence

February 2020
Project Prompt
In this assignment, we were prompted to take any aspect of our life and create a temporal visualization that would be displayed as part of the American Association of Anthropologists annual conference.
My Approach
I wanted to use this assignment as an opportunity to reflect upon my time as a high-burden caregiver for my father while he received treatment for Large Cell-B Lymphoma.
An overview of the piece showing red streaks that take up the majority of the dates shown signifying a large amount of caregiving

Context

From mid-April 2019 to late-August 2019, I temporarily relocated from Baltimore, MD to Houston, TX to take care of my father as he was treated with the very aggressive R-EPOCH chemotherapy for Lymphoma.

This was a "high-burden" situation filled with tasks that ranged from errands, traveling between doctors appointments, and at-home care (daily line flushes, taking vitals, etc). I simplified the data into 5 main areas of activity: Adult Care, Errands/Housework, Paid Work, Personal & Leisurely Activities, and Sleep.

Since this piece would be printed in a large format (48" x 60"), I took the opportunity to place a large amount of detail into the piece. I wanted to give quick stats a passerby could quickly read and provide those who spend more time with the milestones flagged throughout the temporal map.
